Artist mixes natural elements into her paints

Textures created with sand, tissue seeds, coffee, glass, crushed marble and lava

Creativity has flowed through Emelina’s veins for as long as she can remember. Born Emelina M. Figueroa Symonds in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, she recalled being hospitalized when she was 6-years-old.

“When I was in the hospital and they removed my tonsils, I asked my dad for a pad and my drawing pencils—not a TV,” she said. “I was born to be an artist; to be creative. Art was not a decision for me, but a calling.”
Emelina’s artistic style is “urbanic (short for urban-organic) mixed-media.” She creates contemporary and abstract paintings. “The two styles are like two sides of me,” Emelina said. “The structured paintings are more like an inside force…I am bringing them out of me. The abstracts are like an outside force…I am submerged in the textures and colors.”

In both styles, Emelina uses acrylic and water-based art materials, along with organic elements such as coffee, sand, grains, wood, marble powder, seeds, fibers and other natural and recycled items.

“I am into self-development, psychology and suggestion,” she said. “I like working with the urbanic technique and process because I am able—through my art—to talk about my spiritual and emotional development. It becomes a symbol, a representation that you can hang on your wall and remind you of the goal you are seeking.” For example, her painting “Jazz It Up” features three instruments—a guitar, saxophone and piano.

“These three instruments work in harmony and are really representational of our mind, body and soul,” Emelina said. “The instruments represent us working in harmony and balance with ourselves.”

Emelina said that when she begins a contemporary painting, her goal is to capture emotions and moments.

“I feel influenced by a lot of the healing techniques that come from ancient wisdom,” Emelina said. “I think that the root of all this is the feeling of that ancient knowledge that we carry within ourselves and that is being passed on. It’s about respecting and celebrating our elders because they carry that information. We learn from the old to create something new.”

Emelina mentally categorizes her contemporary paintings into subject areas. She equates her “woven” works to frequencies.

“They represent the frequencies that happen in the air,” she said. “So much movement and so much is happening that we cannot see. The frequencies are circular.” In this subject area, she has “The Frequency of Sunset,” “The Frequency of a Hug,” “The Frequency of Restoration,” and “The Frequency of Glory,” among others.

“You see the aesthetic, visual geometric patterns in my work,” Emelina said. “Just like engineers or scientists, who take things apart and rebuild them with the intention to make it better, I have to figure out how to do that with my art and myself.”

Emelina said learning to work with organic textures is really a science because the finished artwork has to be archival.

“When it comes to a piece of fine art, you have to make sure it’s going to stay and not deteriorate,” she said. “It’s like a combination of technology and nature at the same time.”
Abstracts
While her contemporary paintings tend to incorporate circular motion, Emelina’s abstracts are linear. She begins an abstract painting with a feeling.

“I want to create something, say, to remind me of courage,” she said. “I want the courage to come out of that painting. I let my soul and subconscious work on it.”
Emelina said she lets the colors and the textures speak to her.

“I use water and let the paint and the media (sand, tissue, marble powder, etc.) react with each other,” she said. “They end up creating new things. It becomes layers and layers and is almost like a conversation. I tell it to do something and the painting responds and the materials react. And then I go back and it talks to me again and this continues until we are both comfortable with what we have going on.”

Many of her abstract paintings are waves. She has the “Wave of Breaking Through,” “The Wave of Courage,” and the “Wave of Wisdom.”

“They capture that wave division that goes through us,” she said.

One abstract, “Stopping Time,” is about freezing time. The droplets that penetrate the painting end with glass beads at the bottom of the teardrop.

“This is water that is falling and is freezing,” Emelina said. “The glass beads make the water look frozen. It represents the idea that we need to stop time and contemplate where we are. We need to slow time down.”
Influences
Emelina said she is very in tune with her emotions and her artwork is all about trying to find a way to harmonize the two sides of herself—the analytical thinking side and the emotional receptive side.

“It’s about my quest to harmonize,” she said. “It’s not about balance. Balance doesn’t move. It’s about harmony. Recognizing both sides and making them work together…having a wonderful relationship with both sides.”

Emelina grew up in Mexico surrounded by the vibrant colors and traditions of her culture. She drew and painted ever since she can remember and has always been interested in experimenting with textures in her work. She recalled using sand and tissue in her art projects back in middle school.

“It is something that I was attracted to do,” she said, adding that no one taught or influenced her to incorporate natural materials into her paintings.

When she began her formal education as an artist, she studied traditional European oil techniques.

“I was really limited,” she said. “I felt trapped.”

So, she resumed her exploring and experimenting. “I remember mixing oil paints with flax seeds and all kinds of different textures,” she said. “I painted on top of plaster and created three-dimensional pieces.”

Her art instructors encouraged her. “I have really been blessed in that most of my teachers have been supportive and encouraging,” she said.

Emelina made the switch from oils to acrylics when she learned, while in college, about the toxicity of oils when not used with proper ventilation.

“I have always been very health conscious, so switching to acrylics was something that was very easy for me to adopt. These values are just so a part of me.”

As a bonus, she discovered that acrylic paints created many new textures and materials with which she could work.

Emelina said her paintings bring her peace, serenity, happiness, celebration, strength and courage.

“When it is hanging in someone’s house, I know that it’s going to be a feeling that we want to last forever,” she said. “It’s like a reminder. Creativity begins with art and it extends to our everyday life. Experience it. It’s about choosing to create our lives.”

"Seeing a Free Life" by EMELINA

Created for the Passion and Poetry Night Event February 2009

This 24” x 24” Urbanic Mixed-Media Painting was inspired by the Monet “Poplar trees’ studies,” his impressionistic painting style and his macular degenerative eye-disease experience. The color and textures below the trees’ trunks look like people on horses. The leaves from the trees are loose and free. The sun on the woven sky looks like an eye ball looking after the trees. This painting is about seeing life with our vision and not only with our eyes…is about feeling and perceiving life with all of our senses in order to let go of our limitations and become free… like the leaves from the trees in this painting!

“Three members of my family suffer with macular degenerative eye disease”, says Julie Gorman, owner of the Wild Iris Coffeehouse. “I have wanted to hold an event like this for a long time, because I know how this disease has affected my family members and I want to do what I can to help raise funds for research. "Our goal is to raise $2,000 for research through reserved ticket sales and fine art."

There is a big void in educating the general public about preventative care for the eyes, and treatments for eye disease. Many eye problems can be treated with good results with timely assistance from qualified ophthalmologists. In addition to lack of awareness about the eye, there are many misconceptions and myths. Eye research strives to combat blindness and eye disease every day, while providing support and education for people with impaired vision and total vision loss.

Funding goes toward cutting-edge research to find new treatments and cures for Macular Degeneration. In addition, educational materials are created and distributed with up-to-date, accurate information as well as personalized support for patients.
Studies in large populations show that statistically a person's chance of developing a disease is increased by certain risk factors. Although the cause of age-related macular degeneration is unknown, a number of factors appear to contribute to the development of the disease. Some of them are outside of your control, like family history. Others are related to lifestyle, which can be changed. The risk factors that can be controlled are smoking, high blood pressure, exposure to harmful sunlight, and diet.

This year treat your Special Valentine to a romance filled evening at ““Passion & Poetry Night” at Wild Iris Coffeehouse. Guests can expect to be served at each table a tier of chocolate desserts by Soma Truffles and Wild Iris Coffeehouse, including a choice of coffee or tea to compliment the chocolates.

The Wild Iris Coffee house will be donating 25% of the proceeds to the University of Arizona College of Medicine for the benefit of macular degeneration research in the Department of Ophthalmology.

His Wyland Foundation, which promotes the protection and preservation of the world’s oceans, waterways and marine life, is celebrating its 15th year with an inspiring array of public outreach projects—a mission that has been recognized by the United Nations, Sierra Club and Underwater Academy of Arts and Sciences.“The global effort to protect the planet is on the minds and hearts of every generation, many of whom collect art,” Wyland says. “Today, artists can lead the world in the green movement by enhancing their exposure and contributing to the health of the planet.”

Wyland may be one of the most prominent artists leading the environmental movement in art circles, but an increasing number of artists are catching the environmental bug. Many are going green by creating works with an environmental message, some are contributing and promoting environmental organizations and causes, and others have progressed to using eco-friendly methods and materials to create their works of art.

“Wherever you go, it’s green; people are surrounded by the idea at Whole Foods, Barnes & Noble, wherever,” says Alexandru Darida, a nature-themed oil painter represented by Masterpiece Publishing, Inc. “As an artist, you have to reflect what people are thinking. You have to transform yourself and go through the same issues that society is going through. All major artists have been a reflection of the times.”

A Message of Conservation The not-for-profit Wyland Foundation, which began in 1993, is a primary vehicle for getting Wyland’s message of conservation out to the public. The foundation encourages environmental awareness through educational programs, life-sized public art projects and community events. The inspiration behind the foundation’s establishment is driven by Wyland’s love for water, which is reflected in his paintings, sculptures and photographs. Wyland has many environmental art projects currently in the works, including the Artexpo Global Green Challenge at the International Artexpo New York, Feb. 26 to March 2. Wyland and the show’s producers are working together to host several green events with exhibiting artists and the community to raise environmental awareness.
A 27-year SCUBA diver, Wyland has traveled around the globe to experience many of the world’s bodies of water.

“The more immersed you are in the environment and the water, the more passionate you are about preserving that beauty,” Wyland says. “ … I think art is a way to engage people, not only to raise awareness, but to empower people to take action.”
"Beyond the Fields" by Pete Tillack, oil on birchAustralian-born artist Pete Tillack has also done his fair share of world traveling but with a different passion in mind—surfing. The lifelong vocation allows Tillack to get up-close-and-personal with his subject matter more than the average artist. His passion for nature translates to his work, which he uses as an opportunity to promote environmental awareness and causes. During the past two years, Tillack has raised nearly $80,000 for the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association’s oceanic environmental efforts. Tillack’s Web site, petetillack.com, also lists various environmental organizations he endorses and encourages his collectors to support.

Darida’s appreciation of Mother Nature comes from growing up in Romania’s picturesque countryside. “Our playground was the outdoors,” he says. “We were always enjoying our constantly changing urroundings. That has stayed with me all my life.”
"Germination" by Darida, oil on canvasArtists must be a reflection of the times, Darida says, and the environmental crisis gripping the world is something artists cannot ignore. “Artists have to be proactive to save our natural surroundings,” he continues. “Environmental degradation is creating so much disaster around us.”

Artist Farida Zaman launched the “Think Green & Live Green” design series with CP Licensing about two years ago. Her eco-friendly leaf designs are created to inspire consumers to think about environmental preservation and recycling.
“The idea was to create designs inspired by nature and leaf patterns that most people can relate to,” she says. “I combined an important message with an aesthetic choice of contemporary style and color that visually inspires people to care for their surrounding world.”
"Still Life with Pears" by Farida Zaman, acrylic on canvasThe patterns in Zaman’s artwork have been inspired by her travels around the world. “There are some parts of the world where people have a lot less than Western countries, and the whole philosophy of recycling and reusing is an integral part of their lives,” she says. “I wanted to bring the two worlds together by selecting North American leaves on European backdrops of richly patterned designs and color palettes.”

Greening the Artistic ProcessMore artists are becoming conscious of the products and techniques used to create their artwork. One such artist is EMELINA M. Figueroa Symonds, based in Prescott Valley, Ariz. Her “urbanic” (urban-organic) mixed-media paintings feature acrylic and water-based paints and organic materials, such as wood, fiber, seeds and grains. The goal of her contemporary abstract paintings, she says, is to incorporate healthy and environmentally friendly art materials with organic items. “It’s about recycling and reinventing ideas to create art that helps us connect more with ourselves, nature and other people to bring a more organic feeling into our busy, urban lifestyle,” she says. “It’s also about bringing together intentional creativity with healthy and environmentally friendly materials to make a beautiful world out of art.”

"Hawaii Endangered Species" by WylandTen years ago, EMELINA studied non-toxic printmaking techniques, particularly methods involving UV light, baking soda and computer film, among others. She fell in love with the concept of natural elements merged with technology for the purpose of being healthy and environmentally friendly when printmaking. She also learned other mixed-media processes, switched from oil paints to water-based mediums and eventually started using organic materials for her textures and colors.

“I felt inspired to adopt those values when creating my paintings and became more aware of the materials and methods I use,” she says. “I also learned innovative ways to improve my painting techniques, keeping my health and the environment’s health in mind.”
What’s more, EMELINA avoids the use of aerosol products and those with high fumes. She recycles trash, old grains and seeds and turns them into art tools, office tools and/or art materials. She also uses energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances, as well as environmentally friendly home cleaning products.

Using Harvest Productions' proprietary Toujour process, Kerne Erickson's "Heaven Scent" was printed on bamboo--a known eco-friendly, renewable wood source--and made available through Cliff House Publishing. The company selected Universal Framing Products' Nature Wood moulding as its green framing option.“Artists can express and educate the world about [environmental] issues through their artistic creations, but I believe it is equally important to ‘walk the walk’ and teach as much as we can by example,” she says.

Many artists interviewed for this article have switched from oil-based paints to non-toxic, water-based paints and are using recycled drafting paper, brushes and canvases. The list of green tips for artists is seemingly endless, as proven by Wyland’s Top 10 list (right).
“Whenever I purchase art materials, I pay close attention to the product label to ensure the product is safe for the environment,” says Nannette Harris, an artist based in Oakland, Calif. “I look for recycled canvas that I can prime and make new again. I also look for recycled paintbrushes that are hard, which helps me to sculpt the hair on my art subjects. The printing company I use (Squirt Printing) also has eco-friendly practices.”

In addition to using the eco-friendly materials and processes found on his tip list, Wyland has been recycling shipping boxes, whenever possible, for many years. He sends a personal note to customers apologizing for the “shoddiness” of the box while furthering the message to recycle. As more artists continue to go green in various ways, Wyland believes he and his green colleagues can be leaders in delivering a message of environmental awareness throughout societhe most important role, in the world. This is our opportunity.”

10 Go-Green Tips from Wyland First and foremost, remember: Cause-related issues regarding the environment are not a trend, but the future.Wildlife, habitats, climate change, clean water, air, land and Earth-friendly themes are only a few of the subjects that can be explored to raise awareness of environmental issues. You can also create cause-related green pieces of art to support environmental organizations.
Artist’s health issues are tied directly to materials used to create works of art. Use non-toxic art materials to promote environmental concerns, and share your practices with collectors, who are becoming increasingly in-tune with the protection of the planet.
Reuse art materials like paint solvents, or use non-toxic replacements to protect your health when creating artworks.

Use a professional service to dispose of old solvents, paint, etc., that will ensure proper removal to keep toxic materials out of the environment.
Purchase art supplies from companies that offer eco-friendly products, such as Fredrix Artist Canvas and Gamblin Artists Oil Colors (taramaterials.com; ecoartsupplies.com). Shop online to reduce travel, and purchase in bulk to reduce shipping materials.
Use recycled materials. Reuse shipping boxes and other supplies—just be sure to add a personal note that the packing may not look good, but you are using it in order to support your conservation goals.

Conserve energy in the studio. Shut off the lights when unneeded. Wear warm clothes when it is cold. Everything counts, and you are saving money.
Use digital photography instead of film and rechargeable camera batteries to reduce landfill waste and the amount of toxic materials entering the environment.
Use recyclable paper and soy ink for all promotional materials. Use digital means instead of printed materials when possible.

Whether the poem is somber or joyous, serious or playful, when it is read by the human voice, the soul’s voice within, it can evoke feelings within us that may otherwise remain untouched. Like a paintbrush in the hands of an artist, the voice can illustrate the beauty within each verse, painting an image upon the most expansive of canvases – the imagination. --The International Library of Poetry

THE SKINNY

In the early evening hours of each Friday, (exactly, the first three Fridays of the month at around 6 p.m.) Grayleaf Galleria on South Granite Street in downtown Prescott conjures this description into reality. It is a fairly brief conjuring – only one hour long – and features just two seasoned poets, but it is a conjuring, nonetheless. How else can one describe the emotion, the vision, the hope of two individuals being manifested right before your eyes?

THE PLAYERS
Those two individuals – local artist Emelina Figueroa and Grayleaf Galleria Director Jerry von Shott – had an interesting exchange and epiphany one day. Jerry had previously read one of his poems to Emelina… and it inspired Emelina to eventually create a painting. Then, the epiphany occurred. Why not have poets perform their work IN the gallery? No microphone. Just the poetry and the art… with people experiencing this blend of different mediums, as one. Then came the question of where to find the poets. That’s when I became involved in this
formula of artistic alchemy.

ROLL TITLE CREDITS

Sometime around 1996, I started attending Open Mics and reading my poems in front of people for the first time in my life. I’d been writing for years – I had even earned a degree in journalism from N.A.U. – but I’d never read my poems aloud. Through a series of events in my life and in town, I ended up hosting Open Mics, poetry “slams,” and special evenings of performance poetry coupled with jazz and blues musicians. The Prescott Area Poets Association (PAPA) subsequently formed, took different shapes and venues, and ultimately found a “permanent”
home at The M.A.D. Linguist in the McCormick Arts District. In the process, I met a LOT of poets… and they like Prescott!

THE PHONE CALL
“Hello. My name is Emelina and I heard you know poetry and professional poets…? We want to have poetry performed in the Grayleaf Galleria. It will be very simple with the poets, the art, and people just listening and looking around. Please call me and let me know if you’re interested, okay? Thank you so very much for your time and consideration!” I put it on my “get to it in a bit” calendar, but it had caught my attention.

SIDEBAR
I had hosted an Open Mic every week for 7 years (except for those wonderful nights when friends would perform the hosting duties). I put together audience judged “slams” for about as long. And, the coup de grace was a state poetry festival that went on from 2001-2007. Frankly, I’d run out of steam and promotional juice, so I took a hiatus from it all. That hiatus has come to an end.

THE MEET
I stopped by the gallery a few days later… just to talk… that was all… just talk. I had no expectations, was ready to walk away with no commitment, and was willing to be blunt, upfront and totally candid about all the drawbacks of putting together a weekly poetry event – particularly in an art gallery with limited seating capacity. Yet, in that openness of willing comment, I also realized that performing poetry was just what I needed…more now, than ever. I was met by bright, inquisitive, enthusiastic eyes and ears that listened to what I had to say – the good and the bad of dealing with poets, venues, schedules, and with me. They (I was told by Emelina and Jerry) would handle all promotions, press contacts and the making of arrangements to see it through…if I would provide the poets. Deal!

WONDER OF THE I-NET

Within a few hours I had sent out an e-blast to poets who had performance experience, some of whom I had seen for their “poetry virgin on the mic!”reading, back when I first began hosting. “It’s a non-paying gig,” I told them.“If you have merchandise to sell, you are welcome to do so. I have a place for you to crash, and a few bucks for a brew or cup o’ joe.” And, within a few days
I had received confirmations from several of them: Peter “Applesauce” Dorsey (Flagstaff), Kathy Parker (Prescott), Christopher Fox Graham, Wendy Harford (Sedona), Ms. Wisdom, The Klute, Shawnte Orion, and Terran Randolph (Phoenix).

STAGE IS SET
The Art of Poetry Series has been rolling along now for a couple months. The initial reading with me and Peter Dorsey was (admittedly) lightly attended, yet it gave us all a chance to feel out the parameter and various logistical issues that are present, anytime one begins something new. Since that first night, the series has had growing interest and attendance…which is all we can
hope for in such an endeavor. The 2009 calendar is now being established with the first three Fridays of the month designated as Art of Poetry event nights, with the fourth Friday reserved for ArtWalk. On those months with a “5th” Friday, we’ll all just take a little break. The whole process has evolved into an easy-going, no frills, no pressure no hype kind of gig. Like the creation of a work of art, the preliminary decision is which medium the artist will utilize…what
follows, is simply a summoning of ideas - like the magic of that first brush stroke on canvas.
Stop by and see it when it happens sometime. The Art of Poetry Series at Grayleaf Galleria

The "Three Size Strategy"

I would like to share this valuable information to my collectors and blog readers. The “Three Size Strategy” is something you don’t hear much about but that is used and recognized as an ethical strategy in the art industry dated back from the Renaissance. The “Three Size Strategy” allows the Artist to make the same painting three times but they all must be in different sizes however, sold at the same value. This is not to be confused with sweatshop painting practices which reproduce a painting over and over in the same size, for unlimited numbers and many times infringing copyrights.

“ …Any painting can be done three times in three different sizes. This is perfectly ethical, and a tradition that dates back to the Renaissance…Keep the value just change the size....And, no, you are not just copying. By the very nature of recreating an original, again, no two pieces will ever be exactly alike. They might capture the same mood or feel, but there will always be minor differences. The point is to capture the sense and spirit of the original, not to copy it. ”—Paul Dorrell (Paul Dorrell is an art consultant and gallery owner, founder of Leopold Gallery).

So, if there is a painting from my Original Paintings on-line gallery that you like very much and which has already been sold, I may consider creating another original for you (same image but of a similar or smaller size) if the "Three Size Strategy" can be applied.

We had a great turn out. Thank you everyone who attended and helped made this show possible. We had a great time at the unveiling on Friday and Saturday with music, great weather, jokes, lots of laughs, art lovers and collectors from all walks of life… and art sales! Big thank you again!

A wonderful attentive crowd during the unveiling on Friday evening.

Grayleaf Galleria also joined us in this "Latte Gone Wild" celebration and kept their doors open during the event.

Each of the Ace Art Group members created a piece of art with the “Latte” theme which was unveiled on Friday, November 14th, 2008, in the beautiful Wild Iris Coffee House in Prescott, Arizona.

My piece is called “Latte al Natural.” It is an Urbanic Mixed-Media Painting that involves acrylic paint, watercolor paint, coffee, sand, other materials and acrylic mediums. When creating this piece, although I was supposed to focus only on “Latte” I could only think of life and the gift of life.

I had just recently returned from a long family emergency trip (which is why I didn’t get to invite you to the show and was behind on my blog and emails, etc). My dad had died and was dead for 16 minutes. He suffered 3 heart attacks along with several complications. I rushed to see my family (which is about 8-10 hours of traveling)…All I can think of is how I was glad Dad and I had been keeping in touch this year. We would call each other often and we got to say “I love you” many times. I am grateful for the many life lessons he’s taught me.

When I got to the hospital to see him, I was given the wonderful news that he was responding. Doctors had brought him back to life and although he was unconscious, he was responding. After many medical procedures and a heart surgery, Dad is alive, out of the hospital and at home. He is free from brain damage and with therapy and time he is recuperating very well.
My family and I had lots of help and emotional support from so many people and I THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

And here I was back in my studio, creating a piece based on the “Latte” theme for the show, but all I can think of is life, and the life that happens in the Coffee houses…memories around coffee…etc. Like when I go to a coffee house to meet with friends, family and other loved ones! Or when I remember the coffee aroma from my grandmother’s kitchen…or when I have admired a piece of artwork at a coffee house. How valuable that is! Human interactions lead to valuable life lessons and treasures; especially, those interactions that involve love of any kind and levels.

“Latte al Natural” is a little art piece made with BIG feelings about the life that happens around us when people make coffee and/or get together for coffee….and is not all about the coffee is it?

People enjoying themselves, the art, the coffee, the pastries, their friendships!

9. I love roller skating and I am dam good at it!
10. I love dancing to Caribbean music and I am also dam good at it!
11. I write songs and poetry.
12. I sing in public and private events since I am 9 years old.
13. I think Mediterranean looking men are very hot!
14. My nose is pierced.
15. I have a tattoo of the head of a black jaguar on my hip bone.
16. I got my tattoo done when I was 16 years old.
17. I used to be a smoker.
18. Never a heavy drinker…in fact, I hardly ever drink….
19. No need to drink alcohol…
20. I am very outgoing.
21. I am hardly ever shy.

Art Tips for Art Lovers & Collectors: What is a Giclee Print?

What is a Giclee Print?

The word “Giclee” means ‘sprayed ink’ in the French language. Giclee printing is an ink-jet printmaking method that produces high-quality reproductions which retain fine detail of any 2-dimensional original piece of art by using high resolution digital images. Giclee printing involves archival quality inks onto canvas and/or archival quality papers. It provides a better color accuracy and longevity than other means of reproduction.

The quality of giclee printing rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries. A high quality fine art giclee print will look almost identical to the original painting. Many times it is difficult to differentiate between an original and a giclee print unless a) it is inspected from very close up; b) and/or unless the original art involves challenging relief textures or metallic colors. Although giclee printing may be the current printmaking method that retains the finest detail in the industry, certain metallic colors can be of challenge; therefore, often artists will hand embellish giclee prints as an upgrade to make the print look as close as possible to the original work of art.

· Selecting a framer’s canvas print over a paper print
· Selecting a gallery wrap canvas print over a framer’s canvas print
· The width of gallery wrap canvas
· Selecting a larger size print

In regards to the giclee printing market, numerous examples of giclee prints can be found in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Chelsea Galleries. Recent auctions of giclee prints have fetched $10,800 for Annie Leibovitz, $9,600 for Chuck Close, and $22,800 for Wolfgang Tillmans (April 23/24 2004, Photographs, New York, Phillips de Pury & Company.)

Giclee Prints and Original Art

There are Art lovers who like purchasing original paintings because they are one of a kind and/or special to them. Art collectors who purchase art for investment purposes consider original art to be their best choice as long as the art is not mass produced. It is recommended to avoid purchasing any duplicate of original art that claims to be ‘one of a kind’.

Unfortunately, there are on-line art companies and artists who offer to duplicate their original art and call it ‘original-one of a kind’ because it’s done by hand. As a collector, be aware that this practice may be considered unethical in the industry and that an original painting is only one of a kind. These mass production art companies try to gain collectors’ trust by claiming that one artist does all the work. However, they may have the artist duplicating the same painting over and over again by hand and they could also be guilty of copyright infringement. These sweatshops operate from China, Canada and the United States. They hire full-time artists and may be illegally reproducing other artists’ work.

Museum-quality, artist-signed, fine art giclee prints of an open or limited edition, are well respected, purchased, and collected around the world, even by the most discerning art collectors and dealers. Limited Edition giclee prints differ in cost and availability from open edition giclee prints. Any of these giclee prints will always hold a greater investment value than a mass produced ‘original painting’ from an ‘art sweatshop.

Being creative and artistic has always been part of who I am since I was a baby. I believe that the current development of my art and artistic techniques are the result of the many opportunities I had as a child to explore my imagination when playing and expressing myself through art, writing, singing, acting and dancing. I also believe that keeping in touch with my inner child reopens the door to that imaginative world that has no boundaries.

That is why I love creating mixed-media paintings because I feel

I can explore a world of no limitations.

However, throughout my years of academic artistic studies in Arizona, I became more aware of the environmental and health issues involved with some toxic art methods. In addition, I felt in love with the Prescott area and its culture which has influenced me and my art strongly as well. Prescott for me is about health, nature and friendly people from all different world backgrounds and walks of life.

Textures and colors are very important to me in art and in life. Perhaps because of my experience being raised in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, where I was exposed to colorful and vibrant celebrations among people who hug each other in good and bad times. I like to express my experiences artistically but with “a more visual touch;” as I also celebrate with them, the vibrancy of love and life through all of my artistic creations.

CREATION

What placed me into my current art direction?
First of all, the cultural environments I experience in Mexico, the United States, and anywhere else
I travel; secondly, my interests, experiences and concerns for human health and nature; and third, my interdisciplinary academic and personal studies related to art, spirituality, human behavior, communication, finances, health, and other social and natural sciences.

My Materials:

I select the materials that are as non-toxic as possible for human health and the environment: Acrylic and water based. Using organic items allows me to explore textures and integrate the energy of nature into my creations more directly: marble powder, sand, wood, seeds, coffee, fibers, grains, and other materials.

My Technique:

Acrylic and Oil painting techniques mixed with three dimensional/textural application techniques learned from my own experimental activities, other artists, and other artistic disciplines I studied. It is a relationship and a series of interactive conversations between the art materials selected, the creative process, and my-self.

My Style:

URBANIC (short for Urban-Organic) Mixed-Media

Contemporary & Abstract Painting.
The URBANIC Mixed-Media style is more than just traditional mixed-media art. It is about incorporating health and environmentally friendly acrylic and/or water based materials with organic items.

The URBANIC concept to me is about creating art that inspires creativity and expression in our everyday life style with its patterns, textures, light and colors (like nature). It is about creating art with movement that feels alive…It is about the flow and integration of the subjects, ideas-feelings involved, and their energy. It is about depicting stories that inspire individual and universal feelings. It is about recycling and reinventing ideas to create art that helps us connect more with our-selves, nature and other people, therefore by bringing a more organic feeling into our busy urban life style.

URBANIC Art is an opportunity to bring together intentional creativity with health and environmentally friendly materials to make a beautiful world out of art!

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

EMELINA M. Figueroa Symonds, was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mx. But she calls Arizona her home. As a child, she demonstrated mature artistic talents in the areas of art, dance, singing and writing. She began her artistic studies in 1991 under the private instruction of Olga Quinones, specializing in traditional European oil painting techniques. Later on, she became involved with non-toxic printmaking methods under the instruction of Beth Lacour, which influenced her to incorporate non-toxic materials into her painting approach. She now creates her URBANIC (short for Urban-Organic) Mixed-Media Paintings by using acrylic and water based art materials along with organic elements such as marble powder, sand, wood, seeds, coffee, fibers, grains, and other natural items.

EMELINA’s paintings are inspired by her Latino background, the complexities of life and nature. Her vision crops moments of emotional and natural environments; and she celebrates them in her paintings with movement, texture, light and color.

The woven coils and patterns in her paintings speak of the developing integration within our-selves individually and as a world community. They also speak of environments like feelings, waves and frequencies which aren’t apparent to the human eye. The flow in her lines speaks of a constant movement, recycling, cleansing and evolution of the thoughts and feelings that occur throughout our human development as well as in the cycles of nature. The textures on her paintings speak of the opportunity to transform ideas and emotions into tangible subjects; and therefore, create opportunities to direct human intention into a much healthier human greatness and experience.

I find inspiration in the unseen reality of nature: sciences like quantum physics, nano-technology, bio-communication, genetics, biology, geo-engineering, health, electromagnetic fields & waves, social sciences, and any other that also focuses on bringing understanding to the many layers of life.

It is my understanding, that the humans’ and nature’s bio-technology also functions as a highly and sophisticated communication tool. Furthermore, life is fueled by their interactive communication rhythms: Micro-organisms, Cells, Energy, Electromagnetic Fields, DNA, and Frequencies (among others) are a massive part of our reality and yet not often captured by the human visual intelligence in our everyday lives.

Along with the biological interactive communications, the social interactive communications are also essential in our lives: from quantum physics to hugs; from frequencies to language; from atoms to pictures.

However, other unseen aspects of our reality are our emotions like love. When humans feel love, their biology generates specific chemicals; it also emanates frequencies and colored waves specific to “love” that aren’t obvious to the human eye. Love is such a universal feeling and a very much wanted expression. Just like air, love can’t be seen, it is not tangible, it is full of complexities, and it is necessary for our survival. We express love, we give love, and we hope to receive it back...

I represent in my paintings, the merging of the seen and unseen biological-social interactive communication rhythms of life. I capture their essence as I materialize my inspiration; and there, creating an art piece with life, its own natural space field, its frequencies and E-motions.

Yes my friends, they are real! I have them since I was 15 yrs. old….I used to skate, dance, jump, fall, get up and do other crazy things with them. I used them the other day on the streets and sidewalks of the neighborhood. A lady walking by saw me wearing my overalls and in roller skates…actual roller skates! :) ..... she said to me smiling:

“How fun!…I wish I was doing that.”

Framing Tips for Art lovers & Collectors!!!

Let’s say you buy a new piece of art and it is unframed or you just don’t like the frame it comes with. Sometimes people make errors to frame art with frames that overpower the art and/or takes the attention away from it….

I once worked in a framing store and I was their counter rep in charge of helping the customers choose the best frame for their art. In my training I learned that the frame should be picked to enhance the art and bring the best of it…Unfortunately, sometimes we make the mistake to pick a frame that is too bright perhaps...or too busy because we like it.....but what happens when you place that art piece on the wall???…you see the frame first and then the artwork…oops!

Just a little tip for when you are choosing frames for a piece of art work as you consult your local framing specialist:

1) pay attention to the predominant textures and colors of the art you bought;

2)figure out what you like about the artwork the most and plan on bringing that out with the frame;

3) when you pick a few frame options, place them next to the artwork and close your eyes. Once you open them, pay attention to where your eyes go first: what do you see first?;

4) if you see what you like the most first, well, perhaps you made the best choice;

5)if you are a serious art collector, can’t live without art but you worry that it won’t match your furniture or walls...well, some people who deal with this issue try to paint their walls with neutral colors and buy furniture of neutral colors. That way, they are able to enjoy their art collection to the fullest and create harmony between their art and the rest of their home environment.

I suggest you speak with your local and preferred framing store. I personally go to The Frame & I because of their outstanding, professional and friendly service. They have earned my trust and I always know I will be satisfied with their assistance.

Once upon a time, I came alone to the United States with no money, no English but hungry to learn and with a huge dream. I was very fortunate to have had financial support for college with scholarships from different local and international organizations who still believe in me and in my talent.
In addition, I was also very fortunate to have met amazing people in my life who have always been there for me in many different ways. This past weekend, during the Mountain Artist Guild show, I got to see again old friends and teachers who I had not seen in many years.
Teachers like Cathy Krieger. She was more than a teacher to me. She was also there for me as a friend during some of my most difficult times when in college. We gave each other a big hug this weekend and got to catch up with life a little….As she was saying good bye, with watery eyes she said to me: “I am proud of you.”
This kind of comments I get to hear, in addition to the ones I get to read from my show guest book make my life so valuable and rich…These are comments about my artwork, artistic career, and me as a person written by my art collectors, friends, family and other new people I get to meet in my shows and events.
However, there is one note, the very first encouraging note I received just before getting to college. I keep this note on my “vision wall.” It was written by Jim Ward, Artist and Teacher (the photo above). He is the very first person who encouraged me to go to college and apply for scholarships when I didn’t think I could do it. My English was no good at the time and I wish I would had been able to express my gratitude with a letter or card in the way he typed his encouraging comments about me on a piece of paper; which I have kept with me all these years.
Mr. Jim Ward, Thank you… not only for believing in me but for writing it down and giving it to me….I look at it every day and it means a lot to me. BIG THANK YOU!

ALMOST THERE

Let me share a little story with you. About seven years ago I was facing very serious health problems. I would spend long hours researching alternatives that would help me overcome what I was facing. I felt getting better every day but yet better wasn’t enough. I knew I just had to keep looking for that something that would help me restore to my healthy and energetic self. Sometimes I confess, I felt tired and discouraged but my heart would not let me give up. So I continued searching, learning and trying everything I could to bring peace to my body.

One day, this vision came up to me so vivid like a photograph. I painted it on a wood panel and named it “Almost There.” It was a way for me to bring courage into my home. It also helped me remember that I was making progress and that I had to treasure every single effort put into my quest. Every day I was doing something about it was getting me closer and that I was “Almost There.” This piece is about courage, about never surrendering, never giving up, and seeing with my vision instead of my human eyes.

This is Garf short for Garfield. All of my cats have been rescued but this one was the very first one to join our family...even before the dogs....He used to live on the streets, outside this little tiny studio apartment I used to live in. He has always been so friendly and such a great cat (well except that he could be territorial at times)...something funny about him...he loves being on my lap and follows me around the house so that if I ever sit down (cause i am always so active) then he can jump on my lap to get some loving!!!

This is Junior. A little 3lb dear head chihuahua...we rescued him from an abusive environment. He was living out in the desert of New Mexico in a ranch with people who didn't take care of him..he was lucky to live also because of the way he was treated...we got him when he was 4 months and he used to be very afraid. Now, he is the most friendly, joyful and loving little creature on earth....

THE WORK BEHIND THE SCENES

I was watching the special features on the Sex and the City show...while cleaning my kitchen :)

…I love the show and the beautiful love stories...about friends and partnerships....overall, I was amazed on all the production work, thought and preparation that was involved in the show…I really enjoyed Sara Jessica Parker’s performance but most of all the writers behind the scenes, the clothing designers and every single little detail that puts the big picture together…wow! It was breathtaking!
I never looked at the show the same way again…from the dresses that look like desserts and which flow with the lines of that episodes…the director communicating with symbols and details throughout the show in addition to the dialogs…my respect to them…such an amazing work and piece of art…
I think that sometimes some people take art and entertainment work for granted not knowing how much work goes behind the scenes….modeling, acting, painting, singers….from getting up at 4am to do an all day photo shoot to the long hours of practice and creating process….
To all my fellow artists from all creative branches…My deep respect to you hard workers in celebration of all Artistic Expressions!

Once upon a time I visited Spain with a group of people and I got to meet Kim from El Salvador. Kim and I were the only two from the group who spoke Spanish so we connected and decided to room with each other in the hotel. We visited Madrid, Cordoba, Sevilla, Granada, among other little towns of the Andalucía area on the way.

So much to say about this one week trip! Kim and I decided to team up and go on our own many times instead of following the touristic activities. We visited the castles with the group but the gypsy caves and more… on our own-Adventures, adventures! We also got to go to the Art Museum of Reina Sofia, and let me tell you: I forgot the rest of the world as soon as I walked in. Inside that place, I got to see centuries of art creation and life experiences all packed in 5 floors. Wow! Toy’s Store for me!

I separated from everyone to walk the whole 5 floors by myself and take my own time. I enjoyed it very much except that I took so long everyone from my group had already left including Kim…well, good thing I spoke Spanish!…I walked several blocks, got some directions and a cab back to the hotel.

Someday in the future, I plan to go back to Espana to visit, see their wonderful art again, and perhaps, my artwork hanging on the walls of the Reina Sofia Museum…Wow! What an honor!

LITTLE WORDS & LOTS OF PICTURES

Artist: Hai Yan

Art and human connections! Well, once upon a time I tutored art to a Chinese student who could hardly speak any English. Her instructor thought I would be great for her because since English is my second language, I would have an understanding of what she is was going through. Perhaps he was right. In the meantime, I got to know lots about this beautiful Chinese artist and her name is Hai Yan.

Hai Yan somehow managed to communicate with me with her little English and my broken one at the time. She shared wonderful stories about her family depicted in her art creations; and she would also bring me great Chinese food—my favorite! During the semester we spent together she asked if I would model for her. She wanted to photograph me to create digital collage pieces. When I got to her studio she was warm and fun. We got to play with makeup and customs and did a whole day photo shoot paired with yummy Chinese food! A few months later, she contacted me and gifted me these prints of her work with me in them which hang now in my house’s personal collection.

Hai Yan is back in China now…and unfortunately over the years we have lost touch. However, my memories of the wonderful moments we shared together with so little words and lots of pictures will always be part of me and my art…..so if you get to read this Hai Yan….Hugs and greetings to you and your family with lots of love!---Just a thought!

WHAT IS URBANIC MIXED-MEDIA PAINTING?

The URBANIC (short for Urban-Organic) Mixed-Media style is more than just traditional mixed-media art. It is about incorporating health and environmentally friendly acrylic and/or water based materials with organic items.

The URBANIC concept to me is about creating art that inspires creativity and expression in our everyday life style with its patterns, textures, light and colors (like nature). It is about creating art with movement that feels alive…It is about the flow and integration of the subjects, ideas-feelings involved, and their energy. It is about depicting stories that inspire individual and universal feelings. It is about recycling and reinventing ideas to create art that helps us connect more with our-selves, nature and other people; therefore by bringing a more organic feeling into our busy urban life style.

Emelina Figueroa describes her artwork produced with non-toxic materials and natural materials for texture in her paintings. Figueroa is teaching a class at the Prescott Adult Center on her style of artwork. When Emelina Figueroa was 15 years old, she had a vision of a sun with a bright red background. "I wanted to get up and start painting it, but I had a math test the next day and needed to get some sleep," she said. "I was always drawing during school - designing dresses, creating art projects in the middle of history class." Figueroa said she was "born an artist" in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. Now, at age 29, she is able to make a living with her non-toxic mixed-media paintings - textural, tangible art she creates with crushed marble, sand, coffee grinds, sesame seeds, garbanzo beans and recycled newspaper.

She majored in art at Yavapai College and received several scholarships and awards. "I've always been a painter but did learn print-making techniques," Figueroa said. "But printmaking is very toxic so I tried to incorporate natural elements. I went back to painting and focused on acrylic and water-based materials."Her Mexican background has helped shape Figueroa's work. "In the culture I came from, we have human connections - this is important for our own happiness. My paintings have a texture. You can touch the feelings involved in the painting. I start with an intention, then apply textures, which start interacting together, and then the painting takes a life of its own. The painting then tells me what to do next - it is a constant cycle of conversation.

"Figueroa teaches a beginner mixed-media painting class at the Adult Center of Prescott, Emphasizing creativity with her students, she especially enjoys when they look for ways to express, explore and experience their individual direction. "I teach them to apply basic design principles and elements," she said. "They learn how to create contemporary, abstract paintings with non-toxic acrylic and water-based materials and natural elements.

Figueroa is interested in incorporating all types of art into the community. On Sept. 27 to 28, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., the fourth annual Fall Arts Festival & Studio Tour will celebrate the wide range of influences in Prescott's art scene. "We hope to create more culture and invite the community to participate and express themselves," she said. During the event, all of the area's artists, galleries, studios and museums will showcase their unique blend of skill and talent. The Prescott Fine Arts Gallery will have a map and brochure available as well as a program that lists times and events at the gallery, 208 N. Marina St. Figueroa will be the featured artist at the Elks Theater during the festival.

Join us in this unique and adventurous class in which you get to learn how to create a mixed-media contemporary/abstract painting with non-toxic acrylic & water based materials, and natural elements. You will also learn to access your creativity while applying basic design principles and elements. Art experience is not necessary. Class emphasis is on creativity, color and textures. Each Tuesday’s workshop introduces a new theme.

Being creative and artistic has always been part of who I am since I was a baby. When I was a child, I always found ways to be inventive when creating art as well as when playing with my siblings as we would create our own toys and playing scenarios. I believe that the current development of my art and artistic techniques are the result of the many opportunities I had as a child to explore my imagination when playing and expressing myself through art, writing, singing, acting and dancing. I also believe that keeping in touch with my inner child reopens the door to that imaginative world that has no boundaries.

That is why I love creating mixed-media paintings; because I feel that I can explore a world of no limitations when it comes to how I choose to use my materials and techniques. However, throughout my years of academic artistic studies in Arizona, I became more aware of the environmental and health issues involved with some toxic art methods. In addition, I felt in love with the Prescott area and its culture which has influenced me and my art strongly as well. Prescott for me is about health, nature and friendly people from all different world backgrounds and walks of life.

In 1998, as a result of my studies and experiences in Prescott, Arizona, I decided to become more selective of what I choose for my art materials and processes; but I kept experimenting with the natural-interesting items that since before then, have allowed me to give more visual flavor to my artistic creations. That is how I came up with my collection of Urban-Organic Mixed Media Contemporary and Abstract paintings. I currently use water and acrylic base art materials as I incorporate them with canvas, different woods, acrylic textures, and other natural elements such as: sand, marble powder, grains, seeds, coffee, fibers, and others.

I like to express my experiences artistically but with “a more visual touch;” as I also celebrate with them, the vibrancy of love and life through all of my artistic creations.
